Donnie Releases The Daily News
EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it!
One of music’s best kept secrets is back! Donnie left our hearts and minds yearning for more during his four year hiatus that followed his debut masterpiece, The Colored Section. Hot off the press, the musical heir to Marvin Gaye delivers The Daily News, his sophomore effort that resonates with thought-provoking and socially conscious tones.
Setting the vibe of what’s to come is the first track “Impatient People,” which tackles the government’s lack of urgency in rendering aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The song grabs the listener by the collar and moans “I’m not a refugee/ I’m just a citizen/ can I get some assistance?” That’s followed by another powerful number in “Over-the-Counter Culture” which features Phonte of the Hip-Hop outfit Little Brother. The song focuses on advertisements that target the latest cure-for-all for the over-hyped ailment of the moment. Reminiscent of Elton John’s “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” is “Suicide.” Donnie appears to give the listener an autobiographical view into the tragic issue of not wanting to live. Thankfully, for all of us, a voice came to him and said “you’ve got so much to live for.” One of the more upbeat songs on The Daily News is “If I Were You.” This radio-friendly ditty continues with the theme of change to make things better. The accompanying video finds Donnie looking happy and care-free with people of different races.
The Daily News could easily be compared to Gaye’s 1971 classic What’s Going On with its poignant lyrics and a penetrating look at the ills of society. While listening to The Daily News, you are compelled to go inside the heart of a man whose mission is to challenge the listener to do what Gaye did before him and that’s question what’s going on in our world today.
